A report by the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has revealed that the number of youngsters enduring dire drought conditions in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia has more than doubled over the past five months. unicef africa donation-Help children in Africa

Almost 20.2 million kids are in danger of intense hunger, thirst as well as disease – compared to 10 million in July – due to climate change, conflict, global cost inflation and cereal shortages which are ravaging the region.

“Although joint and accelerated initiatives have reduced some of the most serious effects of what had been feared, kids in the Horn of Africa are still going through the most extreme drought in more than two generations”, declared UNICEF Deputy Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa Lieke van de Wiel.

“Millions Starving“

As millions of children in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia face severe acute malnutrition, the most life-threatening form of hunger, the region is also confronting a dramatic water shortage with close to 24 million people now struggling to access clean water. Urgent action is needed to ensure that these children and families get the support they need.

The current drought crisis has led to an influx of internally displaced people, with over two million people displaced and 2.7 million children dropping out of school. An additional four million children are at risk of dropping out of school due to the ongoing drought.

In a recent statement, Ms. van de Wiel emphasized the necessity of continued humanitarian aid to save lives and to bolster the resilience of the many children and families who are on the brink. She pointed out the dire conditions they are facing, such as malnutrition, illness, and displacement due to the lack of food, water, and pasture for livestock.

“Balancing on the Edge”

As the pressures of life mount, children are increasingly vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. Poverty, displacement, and food insecurity have left youth exposed to child labour, child marriage, and female genital mutilation (FGM). Moreover, these same issues are creating a heightened risk of sexual violence, exploitation, and other gender-based violence (GBV).

The senior UNICEF official asserted that it is essential for a global campaign to mobilize funds quickly in order to avoid any more disastrous and irreversible harm to children in the Horn of Africa.

“Ready to Lend a Hand”

Due to the benevolence of benefactors and partners, UNICEF keeps on giving life-saving administrations to kids and families across the Horn of Africa, as it gets ready for further stuns, upgrades versatility and fortifies key administrations.

This year, the UN organization and its partners have come to almost two million youngsters and ladies with fundamental human services; immunized against measles almost two million between the ages of six months and 15 years; and gave safe water for drinking, cooking, and individual cleanliness to more than 2.7 million individuals.

UNICEF is appealing for $759 million to provide essential aid to children and their families in 2023. These funds will be used to support education, water and sanitation, and child protection, all of which were significantly underfunded this year.

An additional $690 million is needed to help children and their families cope with and adapt to the effects of climate change.

As nations and people everywhere get ready to observe the coming of a new year, we implore the international community to make a pledge to meet the potential crisis in the Horn of Africa in 2021 and the years ahead, Ms. van de Wiel said. We must act quickly to save young lives, protect their respect, and safeguard their future.
